Maintainability is preserved, not achieved. It requires constant pruning. Remove dead features. Collapse duplicate logic. Retire outdated paths. Fix naming while it is still small. Merge drift before it hardens.

Maintainability and Team Health
This pillar is technical, but its impact is entirely human.
A maintainable system reduces burnout. Makes on-call humane. Shortens onboarding. Eliminates dependency on retiring veterans. Lowers cognitive load. Turns deployments into background noise instead of adrenaline events.
An unmaintainable system does the opposite. It traps your best people in operational quicksand and drives them out.
